Through the Coalition’s advocacy efforts, we have accelerated improvements to IH 35W North and the IH 35W/IH 820 interchange by several years.

The 35W Coalition believes mobility is key to maintaining our region’s quality of life, and it is critical for economic success. That is why the coalition is enlisting the active support of its members to vote "Yes" to Proposition 7, the constitutional amendment slated for the Nov. 3 ballot.

Proposition 7 is a constitutional amendment that would direct as much as $2.5 billion in state sales tax revenue annually to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). It would aid in right-of-way purchases, construction and maintenance of non-tolled highways, and make payments on general fund-backed debt that TxDOT has accumulated in the past five years.

The amendment will authorize a new, stable source of funding for transportation in Texas, dedicated to the construction and maintenance of roads. Passing the amendment will provide a significant step toward meeting the unmet funding needs for transportation projects in Texas. A strong transportation system is fundamental to Texas' quality of life and economic vitality; it helps attract new businesses and generates jobs.

Proposition 7 has two separate streams of funds that will go into the state highway fund:

  1. Beginning fiscal year 2018 (Sept. 1, 2017), about $2.5 billion will be dedicated annually from the state's general sales tax, once the sales tax totals $28 billion
  2. Beginning fiscal year 2020 (Sept. 1, 2019), about 35 percent of motor-vehicle sales tax revenue will be dedicated, once that revenue reaches $5 billion
